At Witchampton C of E First School, we offer an Outdoor Explorers experience to all of our Reception and Year One children every week. Grounded in the truth that "the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1), we encourage our children to explore God’s creation with wonder, gratitude, and curiosity.

What is Outdoor Explorers?

Outdoor Explorers is an inspirational process that offers learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences. Rooted in our core Christian values of Love, Courage, Inspiration, and Respect, the skills children learn assist in the development of their social and emotional intelligence, as well as practical life skills through play, exploration, and supported risk-taking.

Inspired by God’s call to "be strong and courageous" (Joshua 1:9), we want our children to be risk-aware, rather than risk-averse. This balanced approach to risk empowers learners to constantly expand their abilities by solving real-world challenges, building self-belief, and developing resilience ("perseverance produces character; and character, hope" — Romans 5:3–4).

Exploring God's World

Outdoor Explorers provides child-led play experiences that challenge the senses and inspire creativity, imagination, and independence within a natural woodland environment. We utilise the extensive school grounds within our beautiful village to deliver these rich sessions, linking directly to our belief that children are called to be wise stewards of creation (Genesis 2:15).

Activities include:

• Shelter and den building (fostering teamwork and community)

• Woodland art, potions, and mud pies (celebrating God-given creativity)

• Whittling with tools (developing skill, focus, and responsibility)

• Fire-making in the firepit (learning safety and respect for the elements)

These achievable, hands-on, and learner-inspired activities cultivate confidence, problem-solving skills, communication, and self-esteem—enabling every child to grow, flourish, and live life in all its fullness (John 10:10).
