Writing

Pupils will have the chance to write in a variety of genres for a range of purposes and audiences.  We link their writing to our topics and use high-quality texts to inspire their thinking.   Teachers use forensic steps planning to break down key skills for each year group. Discrete spelling and grammar lessons are taught using the ULS programme, which links seamlessly with our phonics teaching across all classes. This ensures continuity and progression while developing the specific transcription skills pupils need to write accurately and confidently. Pupils have opportunities to apply their learning independently, often with an element of choice, for example, writing from the perspective of a chosen character.  Following both personal and general whole-class feedback or discussion, pupils are encouraged to edit their writing.

We teach handwriting through the Kinetic Letters programme, which focuses on systematic building of the cognitive and physical skills needed for handwriting.  The programme is based around making bodies stronger, holding the pencil, learning the letters through family groups and developing flow and fluency, and developing stamina for writing.
